Chapter Six

A scream jerked Maddie awake. The noise, heartfelt and jarring, cut through Maddie’s subconscious and pulled him from the dark place he’d fallen into. He glanced around.

Where am I?

Nothing looked familiar. He took a deep breath then jerked up to a sitting position to sniff again. How could a place have no scent? The entire room smelled like…nothing.

Lifting the blanket to his nose, Maddie inhaled. No scent. He sneezed. Someone must have used magic to wipe the area of any smell. The only smell a slightly antiseptic stench, as if the magic wielder had tried to purge the world of fragrance and the environment had fought back, leaving a sterile fragrance behind.

Focused on the absence of odor, it took Maddie a few minutes to realize it wasn’t his vision but the dim lighting that was causing his eye problems.

“Where am I?”

Maddie rubbed his suddenly swirling stomach that threatened to dump its contents onto the floor beside him. The soft bed with smooth cotton sheets cradled his nauseated frame.

Looking around the room, he couldn’t detect a single familiar stick of furniture. In fact, he was almost one hundred percent certain he’d never been here before. How did someone neutralize every possible aroma?

Still nothing.

His inner wolf growled its displeasure. If he didn’t need thumbs to open the door he would’ve released his beast. In this unfamiliar environment, he craved the protection of his wolf.

Maddie climbed out of bed. The breeze around him raised goosebumps up his arms. His naked arms. Someone had stripped him bare.

“Where the hell are my clothes?” He walked over to the dresser and pulled open the top drawer. It was filled with underwear. A quick check at the tags proved they were his size. Still, he didn’t know who they belonged to so he closed that drawer and pulled open the next one. Subsequent drawer opening revealed shirts and sweats, all in Maddie’s size. Either someone had done their homework or he’d fallen into an alternate universe and his doppelganger would show up at any moment.

“Creepy.” He might not know where he was or why everything fit him but he didn’t plan to stick around long enough to find the answers. He needed to get back to Temple. His mate must be frantic about now. Maddie had never gone anywhere without telling someone his destination.

A glance around showed no sign of his cell phone, or any other phone. Damn. He’d hoped to be able to call his mate. Apparently his phone had vanished along with his clothes.

“Temple.” He tried to mentally connect with his wizard. A bolt of pain pierced Maddie’s head until his eyes watered. Whoever had drained the room of scent had also put up a psychic boundary. He might never have talked to Temple mentally before, but he knew when he was being blocked. He couldn’t feel the pack, the connection between them gone and the bond with Temple dissolved. Maddie’s wolf howled its discontent, a lonely sound of a shattered soul. He needed out of there now!

“Shoes.
